Shewatsel, Leh, Ladakh, India - This morning prayers were offered for the victims of the recent devastating floods in the Rasuwa region of Nepal and Kyirong in Tibet that have resulted in great loss of life, immense suffering, destruction of homes and infrastructure.

His Holiness Offers Condolences on the Passing of King Harald V of Norway

Leh, Ladakh, India - On learning of the passing of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway, His Holiness wrote to his son, King Haakon VIII, offering "my heartfelt condolences to Your Majesty, the Royal Family, and the people of Norway. I had the opportunity to meet His Majesty in Oslo in May 2000, and I deeply appreciated his warmth and hospitality on that occasion."

I am saddened to learn of the devastating floods in the Rasuwa region of Nepal and Kyirong in Tibet, resulting in loss of life and heavy structural damage. I pray for all those who have lost their lives, and offer my sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved and to all those affected by this tragedy. Since this region has seen calamities in the past as well, these are certainly symptoms of a deeper underlying cause — whether climate change or other factors.
